So she can salute well, but that doesn't tell us much. What kind of an officer was she really?

I think she was great officer, military was her home and she was really good at it. The only problem that she once started confusing military with her family which lead to all her troubles with subordinance. It was clear that she perceived Old Adama as her dad, Lee - at least as her best friend/ almost brother and Tigh - as annoying Uncle Saul, not her Commander, CAG and XO

But I could easily excuse her for that, since it makes the her storyline event more interesting to watch.
