Idol Hands

[livejournal.com profile] shah_of_blah brought up Kara's statues as a possible discussion topic over here in our questions thread:

Personally, I love that she prays to Artemis and Aphrodite but I'm curious about what other people think. I remember the first time we saw those idols, I thought that Artemis was an obvious choice but Aphrodite less so--Athena would have been an easier option given that Kara's a soldier and all that. Which is not to say that I think it should have been Athena--just the opposite! I think it's really interesting that Kara who has such a difficult relationship with love prays to Aphrodite.

What do you think?

Aphrodite makes me think of Zak, and the hopefulness Kara must have had at one point for romantic love.

I'm glad that there was a scene on this show of her (of anyone) using something physical as part of an apparent prayer ritual. Because making the Colonials polytheists doesn't say a whole lot unless some of the people actually act on that.

I kind of wonder if it has more to do with how the writers (and viewers) see Kara than with how she sees herself. Like, yeah, shes this badass hunter chick that no one can touch, but shes also an unattainable, irresistible object of love and desire.

For a less meta view, it makes me wonder who Kara's mother worshipped. Did she worship Aphrodite, and Kara gets it from her? Or does Kara worship her as a sort of rebellion against her loveless mother? Idk.

Well Aphrodite was the goddess of sexuality and Kara didn't have a problem with that. LOL!
