That's what I thought too, that Helo wasn't going to the Admiral to "tattle" so much as he thought the Old Man was the only person who could get through to Kara. I mean, apart from being the supreme commander, he was also practically Kara's dad, and Helo in his own way was trying to look out for her.
I liked the few character moments that S3 and S4 did have, like adored the scene at the end of Dirty Hands when Kara comes in and gives Seelix a hard time while telling her she's been commissioned (*sigh* that was the last time we see Kara happy before Maelstrom, which is just such misery for her :(), and the S4 moment when Helo (really thoughtfully and sweetly) gets all her stuff back that got auctioned off after her death.
