Every Song is About Her

So, what songs remind you of Kara? For me (and quite a few others), Pink is kind of the quintessential Kara-as-a-rockstar alternative, of course, so nearly all her songs seem to apply in one way or another. (Marian Call also wrote the song Good Old Girl about Kara.) What type of songs or genre of music do you associate with Kara? Hip-hop? Pop? Rap? R&B? Instrumental? Thrash Metal? I've vidded her to a country song once--wait, no twice--because she's a bit of a cowboy. Do you have different answers depending on whether you're thinking of her Kara side or her Starbuck side?

Date: 2010-07-13 06:09 pm (UTC)I'll add Thea Gilmore to the P!nk association (especially "This Girl is Taking Bets" and "Mainstream"); she reminds me of Kara's more self-aware inner adult, or something like that. ;-) I tend to associate folk rock or just plain rock with Kara, regardless of whether I'm thinking of Starbuck or Kara (they're the same?)
As for individual songs... "Life is a Highway" by Rascal Flatts, "Invincible" by Skillet, "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas, "Dark Waltz" by Hayley Westenra, "O Death" by Jem Titus, "I'm Like a Bird" by Nelly Furtado, "Unbreakable" by Fireflight, "Leave Me Alone" by The Veronicas, "Why Do You Love Me" by Garbage, "Close Up" by Frou Frou, "Keeps Gettin' Better" by Christina Aguilera, "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks,

Date: 2010-07-13 08:59 pm (UTC)I've got a pretty varied Starbuck playlist, and some are a looser fit than others: "Going On" by Gnarls Barkley, "Walls" by Beck," "Silver Girl" by Patrick Park, "Girl in the War" by Josh Ritter, "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett, "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead" and "O Green World" by Gorillaz, "Rising Son" by Clutch, "Hysteria" by Muse, "Bird On A Wire" by Leonard Cohen (I'm looking toward Sammy here), "Pale Blue Eyes" by the Velvet Underground (now I'm looking toward Lee).
"Everlong" by the Foo Fighters is pretty much my go-to Starbuck song lately, though, and their "Learn To Fly" and "Aurora" really work for me, too.

Date: 2010-07-13 09:30 pm (UTC)Ani Difranco is a big one, especially "Not a Pretty Girl" and "Dilate." Like Pink, I think she could be Kara reincarnated.
The Alexi Murdoch song "Song for You" doesn't really match her stylistically, but the lyrics are uncannily fitting.
PJ Harvey has a lot of attitude and spirit, and I think her voice suits Kara pretty well. "Big Exit" is a very Kara song to me.

Date: 2010-07-14 04:24 am (UTC)1. I love Kara. I really really do.
2. I don't like Pink. I know that she's all about girl power ala Punk!SpiceGirls, blah blah blah, but I just don't like her. Therefore, I don't associate her w/ Kara. Ever. Unfortunately, most of the fans I know will associate Kara w/ Pink. Which is fine. Just not me. But I won't judge.
3. I hate myself for this, but I associate Kara/Starbuck w/ Fergie. WTF??????? I don't understand it. I really really don't. Because it makes NO sense. NONE. So....yeah. There it is. Zero sense.
4. I tend to associate Kara w/ really strong, very complicated instrumental music. Sometimes lyrics just don't cut it. And no one gets this better than Bear McCreary. Seriously. For Starbuck - "Starbuck takes on all eight". Yup.
But Kara is just so complicated....it's hard for me to come out and say.
*sigh* I'm gonna go with Yoko Kanno. This is just one of the songs that I associate w/ BSG in general, but Kara specifically.
4. I also believe that this song speaks to me of Kara's secret side, the hesitation, the vulnerability, the softness that's hidden behind layers that's she's built up. I like it because it sounds like something that a child could play, but the melancholy is all grown up.
5. This post is so hard!!!! I have so much to say and I can't seem to put it words!!!!! I know there's rock songs, etc that I associate w/ her, but I can't seem to think of any!!!! (I'm too lazy to grab my mp3 player where i have a playlist...)
Love the prompt, Tara!
cheers.

Date: 2010-07-14 04:28 am (UTC)I'm convinced that I saw a vid once to a Fergie song that was really delightful and clever about all of Kara's many men and it ended with the shot of Hot Dog eying her in her bunk when she wakes up from the Leoben dream and it was kind of hysterical. But I've never been able to find it again.
There is a Clumsy vid on YouTube I know though.
Re: please please don't hate me
Date: 2010-07-14 05:25 am (UTC)There's a lot of great comedic songs out there.
hee.
Also, I think "Fidelity" by Regina Spektor is one of my favs for Kara (not starbuck, though).
cheers.

Date: 2010-07-14 05:40 am (UTC)plus, there's songs that you just don't want to vid....like "smells like funk". I mean, i love that song but...how would you vid that? WHAT IMAGES GO WITH THAT???? O.o
The song that always makes me giggle is "My humps"....but for reasons I will not discuss here. Let's just say that it involves my college art class, when I chose to spend my time w/ a flamming gay guy and a nimphomaniac/slut (self proclaimed). Hee. Probably not BSG appropriate. ;P
