"I remember the first day I met you, Starbuck. You were puking your guts out in the head because you'd eaten bad oysters on…"

We know only a little about Kara and Sharon's relationship before the show begins. Clearly, they were friends, but how close? Was it more of a mentor-type relationship? Kara says she taught Sharon how to stick a landing (I think?) Did they go out on leave together to port? Dancing at Cloud 9 off shift? Tell us something about their friendship...or write some fic maybe? ;)

This is an interesting question. It seems to me like they were trying to play the two of these as good friends before the attacks and Sharon's reveal as a cylon, but it never really worked for me. I never felt the bond that the dialogue seemed to imply. It seems much stronger between Helo and Kara or even Kara and Crashdown (during cardgames). Maybe it's because they didn't have that much interaction. Maybe because Sharon's reveal was so close to the beginning of the show? Not sure. Even the scene later when Kara visits her in the brig, I know they were referencing some past connection, but I don't even remember Kara reacting to Sharon as a cylon in any reflective way. Yeah, she gave Helo a lot of shit about it, but no reflection of Kara's own personal feelings of betrayal. It is possible that I am forgetting some scene completely...

I agree. I'm pretty sure I was SUPPOSED to care, but as far as I recall, there wasn't a whole lot to work with there until the characters were already well-established (and even then).

And really, a lot of Kara's reacting to Sharon being a Cylon is what makes her friendship with HELO convincing to me. Her outrage reads (watches?) as general Cylons-are-life-ruiners rage and then protective of Helo, rather than being especially personal (and given that Kara is Kara and kind of all about Kara a lot of the time, that seems telling).

Personally, I think these two were extremely close prior to the attacks. I think Sharon was probably one of the few female friends Kara had. The moment that convinced me of the depth of their friendship was Kara's breakdown in KLG2. When she finds out that Sharon is a cylon, she just LOSES it (a scene Katee NAILED, btw) and that more than any reference of their past is what made me believe they were once great friends.

One of my biggest disappoints with this show in general was the lack of interaction between the female characters. Sure, there are a few relationships that get some screen-time (Tory/Roslin, Caprica/D'anna, Kara/Athena) but none of them were very well-developed. I think that's why I was so excited by the potential of Athena-Roslin-Caprica sharing those visions. I thought we were finally going to get a major storyline between these women and then the show never followed through on it. *sighs* So much wasted potential...

I always had more the feeling that Kara's scream at that moment had less to do with Sharon personally then the fact that Kara had reached a breaking point.

Between the physical beating and the emotional ones she'd endured leading up to this point, it seemed the last straw. And it struck me that it was Helo she was predominantly reacting to. Here he was alive when she'd thought him long dead, and not only was he protecting a Cylon but claiming that she was pregnant with him as the father to be.

The fact that it was Sharon, someone she had trained and teased--and left back with an unsuspecting fleet--just tipped her over the edge, IMO.
