I always think of Kara as being very mature, because of all her angst and authority, despite her playful moments. It's hard to remember Katee was barely above the legal drinking age.
I totally *LOVE* that she just quotes poetry here and then makes a disdainful comment about it. Damn, this girl is just so smart and beautiful and sexy. Rawr!
GAH! I LOVE HER SO MUCH! I know everyone thinks of me as a Lee-person first and foremost, but I completely and totally adore Kara. Like COMPLETELY. She scares the hell out of me sometimes bc, wow, she's unpredictable and crazy as frak, but my gods, she is amazing. I think about her ALL THE TIME. I admire the hell out of her and wish I could be bold like she is - she's just wondrous to watch.
*draws hearts and firearms around her face* :D:D:D
** DRAWS HEARTS AND GUNS (ALWAYS TWO NEVER ONE) AROUND YOUR COMMENT **
COMMENTS LIKE THESE MAKES MY HEART SOOOO HAPPY, HEATHER. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW!!!
I know I sound like a broken record, but I feel like there is such an abundance of Lee/Jamie squee all the time (which I get it, because we are ladies and he is a hot hot gentleman and speaks foreign languages and is presumably wonderful to babies and puppies) but... I wish there was as much love for Kara/Katee. I know I shouldn't compare them, but fans are just so effusive and talkative and EXPANSIVE about their Lee/Jamie love and Kara seems far too often to just inspire a brief "Yeah she's so awesome" and that's it. D: D: D:
AND IT JUST MAKES ME WANT TO SAY MOAR MOAR MOAR PLS!!!
Weirdly, I never feel shallow for adoring Jamie/Lee solely for his looks/body (as you can tell). I always feel compelled to NOT do that with Kara (bc I don't want to objectify her) and then it ends up sounding like less squee and more thoughtful commentary. I HAVE TOTAL SQUEEEEEEEEEEE IN MY HEART ALL THE TIME.
In reality, she's incredibly sexy and beautiful and smart and brave and I stare at her face (those lips) all the time. Gah.
I should have said so before and shall make a point of it heretoforever. :D
I think I'm actually kind of the opposite... like occasionally I feel the guilt at objectifying Jamie/Lee but not so much with Katee? I mean probably because it just doesn't really happen half as much.
But really why not talk about how gorgeous she is? And smart and brave and all those other things.
IN THE SHAMELESS KATEE GUSHING DEPT: Her lips kill me. I am convinced she was blessed with the world's most beautiful lips. They are perfectly shaped.
And she looks so unbelievably gorgeous without hardly any makeup at all. I love that.
IN THE SHAMELESS KARA GUSHING DEPT: I love how she was always surprising us in the early seasons. SHE KNOWS POETRY and can quote it off the top of her head!! Which means she spent a fair amount of time reading poetry no doubt. How wonderful that Kara has that quiet artistic side. They could have so easily just made/kept her as just a really hard-edged bad ass, or like so many tough cop/soldier ladies on TV just kind of cold all the time and not playful at all. I AM SO GLAD SHE GOT TO BE ALL THE THINGS! <3 <3 <3 <3
HER LIPS ARE PERFECT. The only rival in the lips department is Kendra. The two of them together makes my brain wobble.
I AM SO GLAD SHE GOT TO BE ALL THE THINGS! <3 <3 <3 <3
THIS THIS THIS is why she is amazing. She doesn't just kick ass. She paints and reads poetry and prays for the people she loves. They could totally have painted her as a one-dimensional man in a woman's body type of thing, but they didn't! She's wonderfully brave and talented and confident in all the ways that disguise her brokenness and fear and she at the same time is inspiration and sadmaking. And of course, it totally helps that Katee is one of the most miraculous actors I have ever seen. HER FACE, TARA! HER FACE DOES ALL THE THINGS (and then she punches someone.) HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE???????
HER FACE, TARA! HER FACE DOES ALL THE THINGS (and then she punches someone.)
THIS. THIS IS MY FAVORITEST QUOTE OF ALL TIME!! I don't know how, but she manages to seriously convey like a thousand emotion, some of which are completely conflicted, every damn second. She's so talented and I can't believe she's not getting better roles. It makes me rail at the universe!!
It's actually funny, because I am a Kara girl through and through and am actually more likely to squee over her than Lee (though I love them both, my reaction to Lee!objectification is usually a brief set of high-pitched squeaking noises, while I'm much more likely to jabber on and on forever about Kara). In my short spells in the actual fandom, I've found a lot more love for Kara than Lee, which makes the lack of squee over Kara/Katee even odder in retrospect.
And how the everliving frak was Katee never nominated for any serious mainstream award stuffs for this? (in fact, how was NO ONE from the cast ever nominated? No one!!) If it was up to me, she would have ALL THE AWARDS. And (more importantly, because awards are kind of useless as a measure of merit these days) ALL THE ROLES. I would so dearly love her to do a movie with someone really cool - not like Riddick, more like Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity. I mean, yeah the character is an astronaut and Katee might not want to get back into space settings so soon, but I know I wished for it harder than ever after hearing that Blake Lively (!!!!!) auditioned for it - and no offence to her hair-tossing abilities, but she's not exactly a good actress. (and all my sad brain could think was, why not Katee? :( ) Why is Hollywood all morons?
I agree that, numbers wise, Kara/Starbuck is a more popular character than Lee/Apollo. But there seems to be more substantial/wordy/effusive squee over Lee in this particular nook of fandom I find.
ALL THE ROLES. That is what I want for her. Blake Lively and Olivia Wilde and Megan Fox can all DIAF. I am still so so bitter that apparently the role in Real Steel came down to her and Evangeline Lilly and they went with E.L. instead?! WHAT IS THAT MADNESS?! Hollywood has no imagination, they cast the same 15 people in everything. Grr.
And not only do they audition/cast the same 15 people for everything, the actively terrible actresses get all the breaks ("not a good actress" is quite an understatement considering Blake can barely articulate her words and has all of two and a half facial expressions - and I am being generous with that estimate). DIAF is about right.
In any case, I hope Katee gets to do a good movie someday that will be a suitable showcase for her talent - haven't seen Real Steel, but never heard so much as a peep about EL in reviews etc. I'm not even picky about the kind of movie - whether it's action (which needs to let her be more than just eye candy, which seems to be the role most women who aren't Angelina Jolie get in action flicks these days) or comedy or even serious, face-crumpling drama, I just want to see her in something that's good.
Sigh. Even the good actresses like Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon and arguably Scarlett Johanssen -- why are they in EVERYTHING? Share the wealth, Hollywood!
That's true. R.S. was undoubtedly Jackman's movie and it got pretty good reviews and won its debut weekend. Not sure the role was much more than girlfriend material but it would be really really high profile. So I'm torn between Katee having a lead (or at least the female lead) in a movie like Riddick 3 where she gets to tote a gun and sass people and generally be viewed (by the other characters, even) as this incredible badass, and a smaller role that might even be more traditional in a huge mainstream flick where her charisma and talent make the part so much more than written, you know? I don't remember seeing EL get any favorable comments either, and I feel like if it had been Katee they cast---they would have to take notice of her, because how could you not? (Unless it was a terrible part with horrible writing, like 24 gave her.)
Oh, in this case I will be a valuable asset to the fanarmy, since I Love, no, I adore Kara Thrace, she is the best thing in the show to me and absolutely my pet, while Lee is just Lee, nice guy and great match for her, of course, but still, she is the Queen, while he is just a prince -consort (sorry, to Lee's fans, that's my the first time when I crashed mostly on female, not male character)
I can easily excuse her and explain why she did it to him on New Caprica. But I still mad at him for declining her maybe the boldest move in their relations when she proposed to dissolve their marriages and he refused. And for his passiveness with New Caprica resque mission (for God sake, he even proposed to leave HER and all other people behind and flee). So, no, I am not "Lee Adama's" girl, but I am totally in love with Kara Thrace.
I came across this Hemingway quote from "A Farewell to Arms" earlier this week, and it really reminded me of Kara:
The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.
Kara's brokenness (and subsequent strength) is one of the things I totally fangirl over. Imperfect heroes, especially ones that can be a little bit hard to love? Yeah. It's kind of a kink of mine.
But if we're objectifying, I'm throwing in my hat for that entire, oh-so-expressive face. The nuance of emotion (how does she make her face say 2 things at once?!) just gets me every time.
Ah that's a lovely quote. "Strong at the broken places" especially resonates with me, re: Kara. I love me a tough but a little bit broken heroine like nobody's business.
HER FACE!!! IT SAYS SO MANY THINGS! GIVES ME SO MANY FEELINGS!!!! <3 <3 <3
Here in the Mini, she says so much just with her shoulders.
I'm with Taragel in that casting agents need a visit to have their eyes--or heads--checked. Only explanation why everyone isn't fighting to hire her next.
What I liked even more than her knowledge of the poetry in this scene is her mocking plea to suspect her again. That's what is amazing in Starbuck: her world collapsed in all possible ways, she (all of them, in fact) may be killed any time and still she can be playful like a kid and mock Lee and make fun of Tigh, until everybody starts smiling and laughing and fell alive and not so scared again
And it's not like she herself is immune to the chaos and death toll (we could see her pain over dead comarades in Scar). But her ability to smile and lough even when the life sucks is incredible.
