Watching Kara gets even more jaw-droppingly spectacular if one realizes the fact that this is the first time she's ever seen a Cylon* outside of a flight simulator, and very possibly also her first time in actual combat.

Not that you'd know it, looking at her...


* the kind she knows are Cylons, that is!

This lovely guest post (thanks!) reminds me of this mostly-gen (shades of K/L) fic, Tastes Like Victory (http://songandsilence.livejournal.com/19390.html), by songandsilence about how it's Kara's first time actually being in war, which we tend to forget sometimes since she's so bad ass.

I must admit, I didn't realise it either until I was a few episodes into S1 (and thanks for the fic link, I love it).

She's so bad ass, it's hard to think of her as a combat newbie considering she shoots down Raiders like she's been doing it for years.

Well since it was peacetime, I'm sure it was ALL of their first times in actual dogfighting combat (not drills against squadron mates or simulated fights)? All the young ones anyway. Tigh and Bill are the only veterans and they no longer fly. (If Tigh ever did? Was he a pilot?)

Pretty sure you're right taragel, a 40-year peace wouldn't leave younger pilots any opportunities for combat since the Colonies' only enemies were the Cylons and they'd stopped fighting each other after unification.

I only added the "possibly" bit re: Kara's combat experience on the off chance that there were rioting civilians/terrorist groups like Zarek's big enough for the military to worry about them (don't really think so), and that Kara might have been involved in one of those. I doubt it, though - in my head the miniseries really is the younger gen's first combat. And boy, they learned quickly...

Yeah I could easily see her having some ground combat/marine-type situations maybe. She was the best shot in or out of the cockpit after all.

I could see that happening, but considering that Galactica was mainly a PR ship by the time she ended up on it, and flight school wouldn't have given her any chance at combat, the only thing that's left is her stint on Triton which didn't last very long. So it's theoretically possible, but like you said extremely unlikely.

Yes Tigh was a pilot. When Bill talks to him about letting Kara off for going after Tigh in the Mini he says something like "she's better than you," then stops and just a few minutes later says with even greater emphasis "she's better than me."
